Colds & Flu Season? Here’s How to Keep Your Home Feeling Fresh
It's that time of year again - sniffles, sneezes, and the chorus of coughs and hacking is making its way through our house. What about yours? When sickness attacks our homes, we tend to focus on resting, staying hydrated, and maybe soup and Netflix - all important things! But taking care of your home during and after illness can help you recover more quickly and help reduce the chances of getting sick in the future. Here are some easy ways to freshen our spaces and boost our wellness, too!
Fresh air and Sunshine
Open the windows daily - even if the weather is bad. Studies show that opening the windows 15-20 minutes a day can help move air and clear out stuffy, germ-heavy air. (Skip if your allergies don't allow it.)
Let the sunshine in - Open the curtains and blinds to allow natural light to brighten your space. Sunlight can help reduce bacteria on surfaces, and it is a natural mood lifter.
Step outside -When you're up for it, spend a few minutes outdoors. Fresh air, natural light, and gentle movement can boost immunity and lift your spirits.
Cleaning During Illness
High-Touch Surfaces - wipe down doorknobs, light switches, the remote control, shared devices, faucets, and toilet handles.
Laundry rotation - Wash sheets, bedding, and frequently used blankets every few days, and swap out hand towels daily.
Disinfect when needed - cleaning with soap and water removes many germs, but for areas that get heavy contact, use a disinfectant. I recommend using the safest version possible. We use Basic G from Shaklee.
After Recovery: Deep Refresh
Wash all the bedding again.
Swap or sanitize - replace toothbrushes or sanitize them in boiling water.
Wipe it all down - wipe down the fixtures, door knobs, etc., once again.
Immune-Boosting Home Habits
Keep fresh air flowing - even after everyone is well, open the window a little each day.
Eat for wellness - Make sure to get whole foods rich in antioxidants and nutrients, which can help boost our immune system.
Maintain a tidy space - a clean, clutter-free home can lower stress levels, which supports a stronger immune system.
Illnesses happen, even when we take our best actions, but a few simple home habits can make a big difference in how quickly you recover and how fresh your home feels after everyone is back to their normal, healthy selves. Fresh air, sunlight, regular cleaning, and immune-supporting routines aren't just important during cold and flu season, but all year long.
Wishing you wellness and joy!
