Book Review: The Human Being Journal - A Look at Your Wellness Wheel
Let me start by saying, I. Hate. Journaling! OK, there, I said it! The Human Being Journal is different, though, and not your usual journal. This Journal is a book that guides you and helps you delve deeply into your heart to understand your true desires in the areas of Relationships, Finances, Spirit, Health, Community, Career, Travel, Mind, creativity, passion, and Giving Back. Through guided questions, you have the chance to explore your feelings about yourself in relation to these topics, set goals, and check in on your progress toward them.
I thought this book was expensive at $50.00, but I bought it because I'd seen it recommended several times and thought it was right for where I was at the time, and I was not disappointed. I found it to be worth every penny. For me, it was a tool that allowed me to be brave enough to make some serious paradigm shifts. This is also a book I frequently refer back to. Journaling and all!

As a Health Coach, I use the Wheel of Health, as a tool that helps me teach people that wellness is holistic. We tend to look at nutrition and exercise as "wellness", but wellness includes all of our being and life.
The Human Being Journal captures this and honestly, it made me a little uncomfortable, because I had to be truthful with myself, which was a good thing. The guides in the book are well done and thought-provoking. If you choose! Like anything like this, you must be willing to look at yourself honestly and be willing to do some work to make a change.
Each month you will:
Set Goals in each of the categories
Answer questions like "What was the strongest emotion you had this month related to money? Why?" and "What is a whisper in your life that you've been ignoring?". Great, thought-provoking questions!!
Create a vision board check-in
Create To-Do lists
Check in on your goals with the chance to tweak them
Acknowledge your accomplishments
Learn- Learn through the book, and you are encouraged to learn each day
Write down your thoughts and any notes
At the end of the book, there is a place to review the entire year.
Yes, it is kind of pricey and yes I'm glad I bought it. I see myself using this year after year. BUT- Tools only work if you are willing to be honest, look at yourself with vulnerability, and you want to change. If you are willing to do the work, I highly recommend this book.
What is the Wellness Wheel?
The Dr. Sears Wellness Institute (now part of ACE Fitness) describes wellness as being made up of eight dimensions. Imagine a circle divided into eight slices — each one represents a different part of your well-being.
Let’s walk through them:
Physical — this one’s about movement, sleep, and how you care for your body. Are you staying active? Getting enough rest? Do you have healthy habits that support your energy?
Environmental — this is your space, your surroundings. Is your home or workspace peaceful and organized? Do you spend time in nature or have little ways to bring the outdoors in?
Social — your connections and relationships. Do you feel supported and valued? Are you spending time with people who lift you up?
Occupational — your work, purpose, and balance. Do you enjoy what you do each day? Does it align with your values?
Emotional — how you understand and manage your feelings. Are you coping well with stress? Can you recognize when you need to slow down or ask for help?
Spiritual — your sense of meaning and purpose. That might be faith-based, or it could simply be what gives your life direction and peace.
Nutritional — the food you eat and how it nourishes you. Are you eating foods that make you feel good and support your energy and mood?
And finally, Intellectual — this is about keeping your mind active and curious. Are you learning new things? Exploring new ideas or hobbies?
Each slice matters — and together, they make up the whole you.
This is a tool to help you assess where you might be out of balance and then prioritize the areas of your wellness as you work on them.
