Do You need a Duvet Day? - Yes You Do

Duvet Day?? What the heck is Duvet Day? What the heck is a Duvet? (Doo-Vey) First a Duvet is a bedding cover stuffed and filled, originally with down. The Duvet is then placed in a Duvet Cover which looks like two top sheets sewn together with an opening at the top. I mean, it basically is what it is. The Duvet cover helps keep the Duvet clean. Many parts of the world only use a bottom sheet and Duvet with a cover, but that's another post for us to debate. (we use 2 duvets, a fat one and a skinny one- no one is too hot or too cold #marriagetricks)

Ok, Got it! What is a Duvet Day and why do I need one?

Duvet Day is a day allowed by an employer to just stay home and relax. No heads up, just call in a Duvet Day. Some companies allow several Duvet Days a year and hope that this helps employees be a bit more honest and not lie about being sick. Employers are also realizing that healthy and happy employees make for a better business.

Duvet Days have been around since the 1960's at least and was first recored as being an official day by a company in 1996/7. "There are days when one's mood is so sour that the only solution seems to be to stay in bed. To staff at Text100, a PR company, there is a third option. They can take a "duvet day". Each employee is allowed two days a year when they can play hookey with their employer's blessing." - Phrases.org.uk and The Financial Times.

Do you need a Duvet Day? Yes, sometimes you do. Sometimes we are just worn down and a day of rest and relaxation would go a long way towards refreshing us and helping our mental health and wellness.

A good Duvet Day means a day just to rest, don't take on other responsibilities and fill up that precious time. It's a gift to you, from you. Wear soft clothes, sleep in, and take it easy.

Benefits:

  • Me time- it matters. Sometimes we pour out to others and never take time to refill and refresh. Well, often right?

  • A time of rest is good for your immune system

  • A good working relationship with your boss - honesty is good

  • If you are self employed or don't work outside the home it still provides a good working relationship with others. You are less likely to be burnt out and testy.

  • Relives stress, both from resting and the chance to be purposeful to deal with stress like doing some Yoga, meditation, etc.

  • Increased energy. Studies show the occasional sleep in or lie in can help our energy reserves over the long term

  • A way to help balance work/life conflict and struggles.

  • Increased productivity. As crazy as it sounds, allowing yourself time to recharge can make you more productive in the long run.

  • It's good for your mental health by helping you feel rested, more in control, refreshed......

While it is important to take a day just for you to rest and recharge those opportunities don't come along often. Try to allow a few minutes in each day to refuel. A few minutes of stretching, deep breathing, prayer, meditation or maybe just a 5 minute walk outside. Whatever fills you up, do that.

Rest well!
